For What it’s Worth

- Dillon Marsh

Dillon Marsh visualises the output of gold-, copper- and diamond mines by the combination of photography and digital scale models. Mines mark places of sacrifice and profit, but also of hard labour and applied engineering, regardless whether or not the mine is asleep or active. The sculptural scale models visualise the material extracted from the mine in a given place. What are the earnings and shortcomings of mining in South Africa; an industry that has so radically shaped the country and its economy? The project reveals how mining has taken its toll and the immense scars that have been left on the landscape, above as well as below ground.
