The muddy soil of rivers and lakes are full of micro-organisms that continuously excrete electrons as part of their metabolism. Teresa van Dongen researches these specific bacteria as a source of electricity for domestic use. Electric Life is the final translation of the continuous search for alternative and natural sources of energy and light. The light installation is fully powered by micro-organisms that excrete electrons as waste product. A future owner of this living light installation needs to feed her and take care of her; a little tap water with some extra nutrients and a teaspoon of vinegar will do it. Van Dongen imagines that having to feed, and thus take care of Electric Life, could result in a deeper relationship between the light installation and its owner.
